Bruton Smith mum on second race

If Las Vegas Motor Speedway is closer to gaining a second annual NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, Bruton Smith isn’t talking.

Smith, who counts Las Vegas Motor Speedway among the seven tracks he owns, spent the better part of a 30-minute press conference Friday afternoon dodging questions about a second date.

It has been speculated that Smith would move one of two Cup dates from New Hampshire Motor Speedway, which he purchased in November, but he said Friday he doesn’t plan to move a race from one of his tracks to Vegas.

“I think we’ve earned a second race,” was Smith’s favorite refrain, suggesting that NASCAR should award a second annual race date to LVMS.

NASCAR officials repeatedly have said they prefer to extend their reach into new markets and have no interest in adding a second date in Las Vegas.
