Thoughts on the NASCAR coverage by Fox and TNT

Like all NASCAR fans I cringe at the number of commercials during the race broadcasts, I sometimes think I’d rather have a nail gun put to my head than listen to Darrell Waltrip scream boogity one more time, and the cuteness factor of Digger the cartoon character lasts as long as an ice cube in 110-degree Vegas heat. Several times during Fox’s broadcasts I have wondered if I’m watching a race or a rerun of Hee Haw.

But for the most part I enjoy Fox’s coverage, especially the vast understanding of the sport Larry McReynolds and Jeff Hammond bring to the broadcast, not to mention the level of energy and atmosphere of fun only someone like Waltrip can deliver.

And then there’s TNT’s coverage. Is it me or did last Sunday’s coverage of the Pocono race have a subdued feeling compared to Fox? Maybe I’m just used to Fox’s high RPM attitude, but TNT seemed a little pedestrian in comparison. I’m not saying one network is better or worse than the other, just that I was surprised by how different they were.

What I admired most about TNT’s Pocono broadcast was Kyle Petty. My partner in crime Brian Hilderbrand mentioned in his post on Sunday that Kyle should consider moving into the broadcast booth full time. Absolutely! He’s smooth, articulate, funny, he questions NASCAR and he brings a driver’s perspective that I always find educational. But I’d just like to see him win one more race before he makes the move.

Just a reminder that Thursday is the last day to participate in the Kyle Busch caption contest.
