Double Down gets its due on ‘Today’

You may want to sit down for this one:

NBC's "Today," that white-bread, middle-of-the-road morning television show for stay-at-home moms is sending viewers to the Double Down Saloon.

Yes, move over misfits, hipsters, punk rockers, tough guys, Bettie Page look-a-likes and lowbrow arty types. There might be some new faces at the bar ordering the well-loved Bacon Martini.

Samantha Brown from the Travel Channel suggested the Double Down this morning in a do-what-the-locals-do "Today" segment, "Cheap Weekend Getaways."

She brought up the beautiful drinker's haven off Paradise Road where the motto is "You Puke, You Clean" after suggesting zip lining in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, and kayaking in Portsmouth, N.H.

"Bars in Las Vegas -- it's all about the $15 cover charge and the $15 martini celebrity hangout," Brown says. "The Double Down is your anti-Vegas total dive bar. You gotta go in with an attitude or you'll get one."

The Double Down's most famous drink wasn't mentioned on the show and can't even be mentioned in this blog, but its other famous drink, the Bacon Martini, did get some play.

Even "Today" host Al Roker chimed in, saying, "Everything goes better with bacon."

It's about time a local hangout gets a little chatter.

Other Las Vegas suggestions were the very expensive Richard Petty Driving Experience and the Pussycat Dolls Lounge at Caesars Palace and the Double Down. Brown also recommended Jo's Hot Coffee and Barton Springs of Austin, Texas, and The Wine Room, indoor skydiving and Lego Land in Orlando, Fla.
