Republican video takes aim at Reid

WASHINGTON -- The Republican National Committee has a target on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in a new video that positions him alongside presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama as opponents of the Bush administration-backed wiretapping bill going through the Senate.

The Republican Party has made no secret of its plans to go after Reid as he comes up for re-election in 2010, portraying him as out of step with his home state, much the same way Republicans attacked former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., four years ago. Daschle failed to win reelection.

The Senate is racing the clock to pass a new wiretapping bill before the current one expires next Friday. At issue is whether or not Congress will agree to grant immunity to telecoms for their alleged role in the Bush administration’s spying program. Reid opposes immunity, but has also taken heat from those on the left in his own party for allowing two bills, one with the immunity provision, to come to the floor.

In urging swift passage, the Republican ad closes with this kicker: “The terrorist threat to America never expires.”
