Chairman post could boost Ensign

WASHINGTON -- Conventional wisdom holds that Nevada Sen. John Ensign can only benefit from his turn as chairman of the campaign committee trying to elect Republicans to the Senate.

Sure, it's a lousy political climate for Republicans and the party is likely to lose seats as Democrats expand their Senate majority. But ever since Ensign took the helm in 2006 he has been cut some slack for leading the committee in a challenging environment.

Many have said he likely will continue his ascent up the party leadership ladder, if he chooses, for taking the difficult job.

Or not. Politico's lead story today says Ensign might have overstepped as he not-so-quietly nudged his Senate colleagues to contribute financially -- then complained when they didn't. We've reported this over the last several months.

This fall, after the elections, as Ensign moves on from this post and the Senate leadership shuffle gets underway, we'll see if conventional wisdom holds.
