Humana to buy Las Vegas Medicare plans from UnitedHealth

Humana Inc., which is based in Louisville, Ky., has agreed to buy some of UnitedHealth Group's Las Vegas business for $185 million. The purchase adds 25,000 members in Clark and Nye counties to Humana's Medicare Advantage HMO rolls.

The sale, required by the U.S. Department of Justice, will help to clear the way for UnitedHealth's $2.6 billion purchase of Sierra Health Services.

"Without divesting the business, the DoJ said that a UnitedHealth-Sierra combination would control 94 percent of the Medicare Advantage health insurance market in the Las Vegas area and result in higher prices, fewer choices and a reduction in the quality of Medicare Advantage plans in the region," according to Business First.
