American Idol” auditions begin in San Francisco

Only two weeks ago, Las Vegas saw the top 10 finishers from "American Idol" perform at the Thomas and Mack Center. And already the Idolmaker machine is getting in gear to fabricate next season's insta-stars:

Early last Thursday morning - very early - auditions for the eighth season of "American Idol" kicked off at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. According to an "Idols" spokeswoman, about 7,000 aspiring Kelly Clarksons and Chris Daughtrys (you assume no one wants to be Taylor Hicks) converged on the oppressive Daly City venue for what appeared a lot a like, well, a cattle call.

One contestant, Bryan Elbe, held a copy of the Yellow Pages. "Randy always tells people, 'You're so good you can sing the phone book,' so I thought I would," said the singer, who had traveled down from Medford, Ore. As a back-up plan, he also brought along songs by Brooks & Dunn and Genesis.
