Group seeks to preserve resting place of hundreds

Northern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services, formerly Nevada State Hospital, buried hundreds of patients in unmarked graves on state grounds from 1882 to 1949.

The group The Friends of Northern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services Cemetery is awaiting approval for nonprofit status so they can start raising money to clean up and preserve the cemetery.

It will be an arduous task since a list of names provided by the state to the Nevada Historical Society identified nearly 600 people that died at the hospital between Sept. 25, 1882 and Jan. 13, 1949.

Some years were missing from the list and it is unknown whether all of those people are buried at the cemetery. There may also be people buried on the grounds that were not associated with the hospital.
