Credit where due…

The adjective "embattled" may always precede Clark County Family Services. But you have to give

director Tom Morton credit for accessibility. Unlike his predecessor, Susan Klein-Rothschild, Morton shows up and even says something. On today's program he gets double-teamed by Jon and fellow guest, child welfare advocate Donna Coleman, who is no shrinking violet. Also on the program, the county's new ombudswoman hired to deal with parents who claim they're not getting a fair shake from Family Services. For the sake of the valley's children and families... we wish her the best.

Neighborhood clout is on the line again next week in a case with an eerie resemblance to the famed CVS drugstore fiasco. You may remember former County Commissioner Erin Kenny ignored Chip Maxfield’s opposition to the drugstore in his district at Oakey and Buffalo and enlisted the help of her commission colleagues to approve it.

Kenny, as we now know, was motivated more by cash from developer Lawrence Davidson than by the desire to provide area residents a nearby stop for cough drops. Now, attorney John Moran III is telling council members he has the votes for a planned car wash and convenience store at Grand Teton and Durango, despite Councilman Steve Ross’ opposition. We’ll discuss it Monday on Face to Face, but Moran says he doesn’t want to prejudice his appearance before the council by appearing on the program. Don’t know if that would prejudice his appearance but his recent gubernatorial appointment to the Ethics Commission might!
