High School Football Picks: Week 8

4A High School Football State Championship Silverado vs Shadow Ridge

Christopher DeVargas

Shadow Ridge High quarterback Coen Nicholas Coloma (8) celebrates after scoring a touchdown against Silverado in the 1st half of their 4A championship game at Allegiant Stadium Thursday, Nov. 18, 2021.

When the newly constructed class 4A launched in 2021, Shadow Ridge was a favorite to be one of the classification’s best programs.

Gone were the days of competing against Bishop Gorman and Liberty for a state championship, and Shadow Ridge with its misdirection rushing attack would be an immediate contender.

The Mustangs equaled the expectations in reaching the state championship game, where they lost to Silverado. Silverado is the classification’s unquestioned best team, with Shadow Ridge and Coronado — at least for now — a distant second.

Shadow Ridge will host Coronado at 6 p.m. Friday in a league game, with the winner getting the inside track in reaching the state championship game. That’s because the losing team would play Silverado in the state semifinals; the winner would get their crack in the title game.

We’ll take a look at the Coronado-Shadow Ridge clash and the other games on the Week 8 schedule in the weekly picks column. The column posted a 16-1 record last week to improve to 101-18 on the season.

Coronado at Shadow Ridge

Coronado defensive lineman Davion Martinez will be a massive problem for Shadow Ridge to contain, but the Mustangs have the home-field edge and too many weapons in their rushing attack. Shadow Ridge 31, Coronado 26

Desert Oasis at Cimarron-Memorial

This will be a contender for the closest game of the week. Desert Oasis 29, Cimarron-Memorial 24

Mojave at Sierra Vista

Sierra Vista has been massively inconsistent all year. Friday, they play like a team nobody wants to face in the postseason. Sierra Vista 33, Mojave 8

Basic at Del Sol

This is rematch of the 2009 state semifinals, where Basic supporters to this day will tell you the potential game-winning field goal was good — and not wide left. Basic 44, Del Sol 7

Props to Clark for agreeing to play this game at the last minute to allow Desert Pines to have a homecoming. Desert Pines 51, Clark 8

Las Vegas at Durango

Closer than you think. Las Vegas 20, Durango 19

One rule in picking: Never select a team who played Bishop Gorman in the previous week. The Gorman hangover, after all, is tough to cure. Palo Verde 24, Canyon Springs 16.

Valley at Virgin Valley
