The calendar has flipped into October and the weather is noticeably cooler in Las Vegas, especially at night.

For high school football, this is the best month of the season because teams are jockeying for playoff position. And, of course, because games are played in near-perfect weather.

Some programs realize their season is falling short of expectations and rally. Others realize they’ve come up short and head inside for wrestling and basketball practice.

The picks column had another strong showing last week with a 14-2 mark. For the season, it’s 88-19.

Here’s another week of selections:

Green Valley at Foothill

This Henderson rivalry is the game of the week. Foothill 38, Green Valley 23

Arbor View at Legacy

Great spot for Arbor View to get back on track. Arbor View 43, Legacy 8

Liberty at Silverado

It’s a shame the meeting didn’t happen last year, when Silverado would have arguably been the favorite. Liberty 50, Silverado 0

Basic at Clark

Basic won’t give up 43 points this week. Basic 33, Clark 13

Mojave at Cheyenne

Make it two in a row for the Rattlers of Mojave. Mojave 23, Cheyenne 12

Virgin Valley vs. SLAM Nevada

Great opportunity for SLAM to flex its muscles in Class 3A. It remains the team to beat in the classification. SLAM 31, Virgin Valley 23

Las Vegas at Sierra Vista

Anyone have a coin? Sierra Vista 23, Las Vegas 22

Spring Valley at Palo Verde

Palo Verde should play for the state championship. Palo Verde 38, Spring Valley 11

Faith Lutheran at Durango

Well-rested Faith Lutheran remains in first place of the Class 5A, Division II. Faith Lutheran 23, Durango 6

Bishop Gorman at Shadow Ridge

Schedule makers unkind to Shadow Ridge. The Mustangs close with Gorman and then Liberty. Gorman 53, Shadow Ridge 7

Desert Pines at Coronado

This is a must-win spot for Desert Pines. Look for the powerhouse team to return to their winning ways. Desert Pines 34, Coronado 16

Valley at Eldorado

Chalk one up for Eldorado in this battle of old-school programs. Eldorado 38, Valley 12

Cimarron-Memorial at Desert Oasis

Cimarron-Memorial has been consistently inconsistent. Desert Oasis 27, Cimarron 23

Pahrump Valley at Moapa Valley

Some feel Moapa Valley is still the team to beat in the Class 3A Southern League. Moapa Valley 41, Pahrump 17

Democracy Prep at Boulder City

Good luck figuring out Boulder City. One week it was badly beaten by Moapa Valley; the next it beat Virgin Valley by two scores. Boulder City 31, Democracy Prep 8

Western at Bonanza

Bonanza gets its second win of the season — a small, but significant sign of improvement. Bonanza 20, Western 10

Canyon Springs at Chaparral

Canyon Springs builds on its undefeated season. Canyon Springs 28, Chaparral 15
