It was a cold and rainy day, the chill of winter gnawed like a knife, as we strung the last set of festive lights. Now that is a tall tale. Really, it was Sunday last when the family and I, dressed in shorts and tee shirts ventured out on an annual trek to purchase our Christmas tree right here in Clark County.

Living in Las Vegas offers many wonderful benefits, but I must admit that one area of lacking is a mid-America seasonal climate change. You know, of "the weather outside is frightful" variety.

It is particularly for this reason that some people find it hard to get into the mood of the holidays. It is particularly for this reason that I encourage families to reach out to the local Henderson community to find seasonal celebrations that can bring alive a sense of holiday wonder.

The City of Henderson Department of Cultural Arts and Tourism is a great resource for just this type of event. My recommendation for this year is WinterFest.

"This year, we will be transforming the downtown Henderson Events Plaza into a Winter wonderland," said Nicole Johnson, communications coordinator for the City of Henderson. "Can you imagine the excitement in the children's eyes as they experience the winter fun of our ice skating and snow play areas on both Friday and Saturday nights." This year's event will be emceed by Kevin Janison, News Channel 3's weather and news anchor, along with Henderson Mayor James Gibson and Santa Claus.
