Hosting a successful radio show isn’t easy. Enjoying longevity and establishment as pillars in the community is an even rarer feat for most on-air personalities.
For Mark & Mercedes in the Morning, Mix-94.1’s longtime morning radio team, the secret to becoming household names in Las Vegas since 1997 is all in the way they approach it.
“What we love best about the show is that it's not really a ‘show,’ ” said Mercedes, in a statement Jerry Seinfeld would likely appreciate. “We are so grateful to have a show that is more of a meeting place for us and our listeners to get together, get informed, give back, and have a laugh or two.”
Sometimes, they have a laugh or two at each other. Last year, for example, after losing their annual Super Bowl wager with the mayoral family, the hosts, along with producer J.C. Fernandez, had to, um, “express themselves” by dressing as Madonna.
“I think that was the worst bet we’ve lost. For me, it was fun, but for Mark and J.C. it was pretty embarrassing. But they did look great in bustiers and fishnets!”
We’ll take her word for it … and fortunately, there’s no such penalty for losing picks in the Chase for the Golden Nerf. M&M are in the middle of the standings but enjoying the contest all the same. Both Mark and Mercedes hail from the Denver area, so it’s no surprise what NFL team they root for every week.
“We LOVE our Broncos and have full faith that they will end up in the big game! Geez, I hope that didn't jinx them!” Mercedes said.
Both personalities are active in the community and preparing to host next Friday night’s “Not So Silent Night” concert at the Joint inside the Hard Rock Hotel. Mercedes is excited about the lineup of talent.
“The Fray, Gavin DeGraw, Five for Fighting… We wanted to give back to the community in a fun way that would also benefit our listeners. This year, we are giving a portion of proceeds to the American Heart Association.”
