Snow dusts the city

Cupid's arrows might have been more appropriate for Valentine's Day, but snowflakes were what was falling near Alta Drive and Jones Boulevard shortly after 2 p.m. today.

The National Weather Service said that a "dusting" of snow fell in Kyle and Lee Canyons today as a cold front that whipped winds gusting to 67 mph kept the Las Vegas Valley's high temperatures at about 50 degrees.

At Alta and Jones the early-afternoon temperatures were in the upper 40s, meteorologist Jon Adair said. "That's enough to allow some snowflakes to appear," Adair said.

The strong winds overnight uprooted trees, caused power outages and blew roof shingles off homes and businesses.

Nevada Power Company reported that up to 18,000 homes were without electricity overnight. At least 3,000 homes were still without power today.
