Helicopter lands hard after losing power

A student pilot and instructor flying a helicopter in a common practice air space over State Route 157, 15 miles northwest of Las Vegas, were forced to land today when the craft lost power, an FAA spokesman said.

Shortly after the Schweizer 269-C left North Las Vegas Airport, it reported a loss of power and came down on the road leading to Mount Charleston at 9:43 a.m., FAA spokesman Ian Gregor says.

The student pilot, whose name was unavailable, suffered a small cut and the flight instructor was not injured, Gregor says.

The helicopter is registered to L.J. Air of Las Vegas.

The FAA will investigate the accident.

Editor's note: This story has been corrected. An earlier version said the helicopter took off from McCarran International Airport.
