Three Assembly leaders, all mentioned as possible speakers, are having an event Oct. 17 at the fancy MGM Grand Mansion, sending a message to the GOP minority and one of their colleagues who also wants to succeed John Oceguera.
Debbie Smith, Marilyn Kirkpatrick and Marcus Conklin are headlining the fundraiser, which purposely does not have William Horne along with them. Horne also wants to be speaker and has support from some of the disaffected rookies. But this is one in a series of events designed to show Horne he is not considered part of the future leadership team. Subtle.
The event, as you can see from the host committee below, also is designed to suck up a ton of money from the usual suspects as the Democrats expect a robust headwind trying to hold onto their majority. Check out all the lobbying interests represented in the host committee below – did they miss anyone? Again, subtle.
By the way, I'm still not sure how this unified trio plans to choose who will be speaker. Cut the cards? Draw straws? Fistfight? (I favor Kirkpatrick in this choice.)
One other note of historical irony: Remember when Smith and Kirkpatrick were doing all they could to pound MGM over the company's green-building tax breaks. All forgotten now....
