Soccer talent Khamis fails to make grade at UNLV

Francis Khamis, one of the top junior college prospects in the country, did not pass a math class over the past month and will not play at UNLV.

It was one of three classes the 6-foot-3 forward needed to have to be eligible for the Rebels.

Those who had seen Khamis play in and around Las Vegas in recent years envisioned him forming a dynamic striker tandem with Danny Cruz this season at UNLV.

Now the 21-year-old native of Sudan has few options. He has one year of eligibility remaining, and Rebels coach Mario Sanchez said he might return to Yavapai College in Prescott, Ariz.

Khamis led Yavapai to a 24-2 record and an NJCAA Division-I national championship last fall with 23 goals and 9 assists. Those 55 points were 14th in the nation among Division I junior colleges.

Sanchez was disappointed but said he hopes Khamis works toward having a productive future.
