UNLV soccer teams get early recognition

UNLV’s soccer teams are off to blistering starts, and others have noticed.

The men’s team has won its first two games of the season for the first time since 2002, and sophomore striker Daniel Cruz has paced the team with three goals.

The 5-foot-8 sophomore striker from Glendale, Ariz., supplied all the offense in the Rebels’ 2-0 season-opening victory over Jacksonville last weekend, then he tallied the first goal in a 2-1 win over Radford.

The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tabbed him as its player of the week, the first weekly honor of Cruz’s career.

The UNLV women were paced by 5-5 junior goalie Alicia Lugo, who has a scoreless streak of 299 consecutive minutes.

The Mountain West Conference named her the league’s defensive player of the week, the third weekly honor of her career.

She left a match against UNR with a 5-0 lead, and she was between the pipes for a 1-0 victory over Pacific, her second shutout of the season.

UNLV is 3-0-1 and ranked 10th in the Soccer Buzz West Region. It also caught some votes in the Soccer Buzz Top 25 poll. It’s the first time for both since 2004.

The UNLV men play in a Cal State Fullerton tournament this weekend, against Fullerton on Friday at 5 p.m. and Cal State Northridge on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.

The women’s team plays at Cal State Northridge on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and at Long Beach State on Sunday at noon.
