Neagle provides spark for 5-2-1 men’s soccer team

Lamar Neagle’s nose for the net has helped continue an outstanding start to the season for the UNLV men’s soccer team.

He tallied all three of the Rebels’ goals over the weekend to earn Mountain Pacific Sports Federation co-player of the week honors with Steve Noller of Air Force. It was Neagle's second such honor in his career.

Neagle’s score Friday at San Francisco enabled the Rebels to escape with a 1-1 tie against the Dons. Sunday, he scored two within 29 seconds of each other for a 2-1 victory over St. Mary’s.

Those two quick strikes almost sound like a record, right? Wrong. John Hall of American scored consecutive goals only nine seconds apart from each other against George Washington on Oct. 6, 1987, to establish an NCAA record.

UNLV (5-2-1) begins MPSF play Oct. 3 at Air Force. The Rebels have had only two winning seasons in their last 15 campaigns, and they have not played in an NCAA tournament since 1988.

Third-year coach Mario Sanchez might be ending that dearth soon, thanks to efforts by players like Neagle.

The senior striker from Federal Way, Wash., has 23 career goals, which tie him for ninth on UNLV’s all-time scoring chart.
