UNLV hoops among Top 25 of another preseason chart

UNLV was ranked 23rd on a preview of the 2008-09 basketball season by the recruiting service Rivals.com.

The Rebels went to the Sweet 16 two seasons ago and won a first-round game over Kent State, before losing to eventual national-champion Kansas, in March.

They will be led by seniors Wink Adams, Joe Darger and Rene Rougeau this season. Tre’Von Willis, a sophomore point guard who transferred from Memphis, will run the team.

Practice officially begins Oct. 17 and UNLV opens its season Nov. 15 in a 2:30 p.m. game against the University of San Diego at the Thomas & Mack Center.

“Kruger has the Rebels rolling after consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and 57 wins the past two seasons,” Rivals wrote. “There’s reason to expect more of the same.”

The preseason annual Athlon rated the Rebels 24th. Lindy’s, available at news stands soon, will rank them 37th.
