CSN in mix for last three SWAC baseball weeks

Three weeks remain in the Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball race, and the College of Southern Nevada might be rooting for its rival to the north this weekend.

Both Western Nevada (24-17, 18-10 in league) and CSN (29-14, 18-10) trail conference leader Salt Lake Community College (31-10, 23-5) by five games.

The Wildcats play host to Salt Lake in Carson City in doubleheaders Friday and Saturday. CSN, off a weekend in which in won three of four at Colorado Northwestern, plays four at Eastern Utah (10-33, 6-22).

If WNC can win its series against Salt Lake, or get a sweep, it will be a tight three-way race going into the final two weekends of the regular season. Salt Lake took three of four games against WNC in Utah earlier this season.

Ninth-year CSN coach Tim Chambers, who spent considerable time in an area hospital last week trying to have a constantly running bloody nose diagnosed, might not be in a mood to determine the possibilities.

Western Nevada has an edge, by finishing on the road against SWAC bottom feeders Eastern Utah and Colorado Northwestern (8-28, 5-23). It has also won six of eight games against CSN this season.

The Coyotes end with a home series against Salt Lake and then travel to Southern Idaho (23-21, 14-14). Salt Lake plays it final series at home against Colorado.

The regular-season champ plays host to the conference tournament May 7-10.

CSN won the NJCAA World Series in 2003 and hasn’t been back to Grand Junction, Colo. Last season, WNC went 2-2 in its first World Series appearance.
