This just in …

The latest in local sports, most of which is true, the other of which may be a slight exaggeration of the truth.

UNLV's Elena Gantcheva has become the first Mountain West Conference player to be named women’s tennis player of the week eight times by defeating TCU's 63rd-ranked Nina Munch-Soegaard, New Mexico's 123rd-ranked Ola Abou-Zekry and San Diego State's Holly Bagshaw, who apparently is the only player in the conference that isn't nationally ranked.

Things you can bet on at Harrah's Las Vegas (if you read Jeff Haney's column in Monday's Sun you know that some wagers -- such as the NBA "at the end of the season" -- are now off-limits):

--- Jacksonville minus 7 (but only on a 7-day forecast).

--- The "over" on Barack Obama's next bowling outing.

--- The Cubs to win the World Series.

Despite dying in 2003, Althea Gibson has climbed into the NCAA women's tennis rankings at No. 148, the organization announced today.
