Wranglers coach had never seen Avery shenanigans

Las Vegas Wranglers coach Glen Gulutzan laughed when he saw what New York Rangers left wing Sean Avery pulled off the other night.

With a 5-on-3 power play against the New Jersey Devils in Game 3 of their NHL playoff series, Avery blocked goalie Martin Brodeur’s view of the action and waved his stick at Brodeur’s eyes.

“It was funny,” Gulutzan said. “Original.”

It broke no NHL rules, although the league quickly outlawed the act in the interpretation of Rule 75 – Unsportsmanlike Conduct.

The ECHL, of which Las Vegas is affiliated, followed suit Wednesday. It will result in an unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty.

“You know what? I’d never seen that before in my entire life,” Gulutzan said. “It just shows you his brain works a little differently than everyone else’s.”

Avery has gotten a lot out of being gritty and clever. He wasn’t drafted, but he’s played in the NHL for seven seasons. Now he’s immortalized with his own place in the rule book.
