Wranglers blast Alaska, 8-0, in first game of conference semifinals

The Wranglers continued to pelt a playoff foe with shots Friday night at the Orleans Arena, but it wasn’t just an ordinary opponent.

Las Vegas drubbed Alaska, 8-0, to take a 1-0 lead in its best-of-seven National Conference semifinal series. The Wranglers outshot the Aces, 46-20, continuing a trend from the quarterfinals.

Shawn Limpright, Peter Ferraro and Adam Miller each scored two goals for Las Vegas, and rookie goalie Kevin Lalande recorded his first postseason shutout.

Game 2 is Saturday night at 7:05 at the Orleans, then the series shifts to Anchorage.

What a difference a mother can make. After giving up six goals Sunday in Stockton, Lalande’s mother, Ginette, scolded her oldest son from her home in Kingston, Ontario.

Shape up, she said. Play with your heart and soul. Quit thinking.

He allowed only one goal Tuesday, closing out the series against the Thunder. Then he stoned the Wranglers’ nemesis on Friday.

Twice in the past four seasons, Alaska has defeated Las Vegas in the second round and advanced to win the Kelly Cup championship.

If the Wranglers keep playing like they did Friday, maybe they’ll soon be lifting a Kelly Cup of their own.
