Champion show horse dies in South Point ring

A two-time national champion show horse collapsed and died at the South Point Equestrian Center tonight.

The Pure Spanish Horse Ravel died of a cardiac incident similar to a heart attack, according to veterinarians who performed examinations at the scene.

The incident occurred during a benefit to support the Foundation for the Pure Spanish Horse Rescue Program. The arena was cleared after Ravel collapsed.

“He appeared to be in perfect health," said Dr. Leslie Schure of Desert Pines Equine Center. "There were no outward signs that there was anything wrong. He died like we all wish we could; quickly and pain free.”

Steve Stallworth, the South Point Equestrian Center general manager, said, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of a member of our Equestrian family. This being a first for the South Point, we are doing everything we can to ease the community through this time.”

The show horse Ravel was owned by Henry "Hank" Gutierrez of Southern California.
