Cubs tickets on sale March 3

It happens every spring.

No, I'm not talking about that old baseball movie in which Ray Milland, playing a college professor, discovers a formula that makes a baseball repel wood -- although Ted Lilly certainly could have used a vial of that stuff against the Diamondbacks in the playoffs.

I'm talking about local baseball fans lining up at Cashman Field for Cubs spring training tickets when they go on sale at noon on Monday, March 3.

Tickets for the Cubs-Seattle Mariners games here March 28-29 cost $30 for berm and grandstand, $45 for seats on the plaza. The Cashman box office will open promptly at noon while fans also can charge tickets by calling TicketMaster (474-4000) or clicking on its Web site (www.ticketmaster.com).

It's a lot easier to call or go online for tickets. But speaking as a Cubs fan, you'll enjoy going out to the park and standing in line a lot more. This is because misery loves company, and there will be about 600 guys who remember that ball going through Leon Durham's legs in San Diego with the same gory detail that you do.

You also may encounter one guy wearing an Ichiro jersey. But if he tries to move ahead of you in line when you're talking about that evil Bruce Froemming blowing Milt Pappas' perfect game in '72, you have my permission to go Lee Elia on him.
