On the verge of getting swept out of the ECHL Kelly Cup playoffs by the Las Vegas Wranglers on Thursday night, Alaska salvaged a game with a 6-5 victory in overtime in Anchorage.
Forward F.P. Guenette scored the deciding goal 8 minutes, 17 seconds into the extra period at Sullivan Arena.
The Wranglers lead the second-round series, 3-1, and Game 5 will be played Friday night in Alaska. If needed, Games 6 and 7 will be played at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas on Tuesday and Wednesday night, respectively.
Las Vegas dropped to 0-3 lifetime in overtime playoff games in Sullivan.
Peter Ferraro put in two late goals in the third period to give Las Vegas a 5-4 lead. But the Aces rallied with 40 seconds left to tie it, on a goal by right wing Cam Keith, to force overtime.
The scoring started in the second period, as forward Kelly Czuy and left wing Bruce Mulherin gave Las Vegas a 2-0 lead.
Matt Robinson cut Alaska’s deficit in half, but Wranglers left wing Shawn Limpright slapped a shot by Aces goalie Marek Schwarz with about two minutes remaining in the period for a 3-1 lead.
In the first 3 1/2 minutes of the third period, though, the Aces tied it up on power-play goals from Guenette and center Olivier Filion.
Six minutes into the period, Alaska, with a two-man advantage, took a 4-3 lead when left wing Josh Soares beat Wranglers goalie Kevin Lalande.
