Despite racking up an early three-run lead, the Las Vegas 51s cost themselves a victory with two detrimental errors in the third inning to ultimately fall to the Salt Lake Bees 9-8 in front of 5,491 fans at Cashman Field Friday night.
The 51s hammered Bees pitcher Sean O'Sullivan for five hits and three runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead.
But Salt Lake answered back with a seven-run third inning.
The 51s committed two costly fielding errors to catalyze Salt Lake's scoring binge in the third. Salt Lake second baseman Sean Rodriguez also smashed a two-run homer to put the Bees on top 7-3.
Salt Lake scored two more runs in the fourth inning before their bats went silent for the rest of the game.
Although the 51s out-hit the Bees 17-12, they could not rally from the 9-3 deficit.
O'Sullivan earned the victory even though he allowed six earned runs and 12 hits in five and 2/3 innings. Las Vegas pitcher Dirk Hayhurst takes the loss after giving up nine runs on 10 hits in 3 and 2/3 innings.
The 51s (6-15) face the Bees (14-7) again Saturday at 7:05 p.m., and they finish the series Sunday at 12:05 p.m.
