Vegas Play of the Day: Cubs at Cardinals

Cubs No-Hitter

Associated Press

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Jake Arrieta reacts after throwing his first career no-hitter during the ninth inning of a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2015, in Los Angeles. The Cubs won 2-0.

We’re entering the third season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won the 2015-2016 season, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015. Bern stepped away in the middle of the 2016-2017 season with a 16-12 record and $13,317 bankroll, with Mike Grimala taking his place.

Chicago Cubs minus-135 at St. Louis Cardinals: $540 to win $400: Many had the Chicago Cubs winning 100 or more games this season. So, there’s no way the defending World Series champions will lose consecutive games to open the season, right? Well, not with Jake Arrieta pitching.

Arrieta has won 40 games in the past two seasons for the Cubs in becoming one of the game’s most consistent pitchers. More important: He’s in a contract year and will be pitching each start for a significant payday.

He’ll be opposed by the Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright, who is far removed from his dominating ways of a few seasons ago. Batters in the current Cubs lineup who have faced Wainwright are hitting .302, according to ESPN.

Getting Cubs at minus-135, even if they are the road team, brings good value because they will be heavy betting favorites for most of season.

Current Standings: Grimala (6-10, $8,425), Keefer (39-34-3, $7,831), Granger (13-17-1, $6,677), Brewer (26-28-1, $6,285)
