Vegas Play of the Day: Cardinals at White Sox

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

St. Louis Cardinals minus-130 at Chicago White Sox, $390 to win $300: Cardinals starter Luke Weaver gave up two runs in eight innings last week and should again flourish against the struggling White Sox. Chicago has a miserable 30-61 record and ranks low in all offensive categories, including 25th in runs at 3.5 per game.

While Weaver has been inconsistent all season — hence, the 4.92 earned average — he’s still considered one of the game’s up-and-coming pitchers. And St. Louis is coming off a 12-2 win last night, continuing to directly be in the thick of the postseason race at three games out of the wild card spot.

I always favor wagering on teams who are fighting for the playoffs against an opponent with nothing to compete for. The Cards’ players realize this is one of those opponents they have to beat.

Keefer (3-0, $11,290), Granger (1-0, $10,355), Grimala (1-2, $9,500), Brewer (0-1, $9,500)
