Kershaw

Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw throws during the first inning of Game 1 of baseball’s World Series against the Houston Astros Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017, in Los Angeles.

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Los Angeles Dodgers minus-150 at Milwaukee Brewers, $750 to win $500: The Brewers have lost seven straight games. While I tend to avoid betting against home teams on a Saturday night — when MLB crowds are great — it’s tough to ignore this streak. It’s also tough to pass on a friendly minus-150 betting number with the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw, who for many is the sport’s best pitcher.

The Dodgers, who last season reached the World Series, struggled during parts of the first half the season to duplicate that success. But they have a slim lead in the National League West and appear headed for another postseason run after this week acquiring Manny Machado. Machado reached base four times Friday in his first game with Los Angeles.

Keefer (3-1, $10,760), Granger (1-0, $10,155), Grimala (2-2, $9,900), Brewer (1-3, $9,060)
