South Carolina wins Kelly Cup

The South Carolina Stingrays won a record third ECHL Kelly Cup championship with a 4-2 victory over the Alaska Aces in game 7 Friday night.

South Carolina nearly blew a 3-1 series lead, but the Stingrays managed to overcome a raucous sold-out Sullivan Arena crowd of 6,610 fans to hoist the Kelly Cup.

This is also the first time the team that knocked the Las Vegas Wranglers out of the playoffs has not gone on to win the Kelly Cup.

Former Wrangler Rob Ricci scored his first playoff goal early in the second period to give the Stingrays a 2-0 lead. Maxime Lacroix, Trent Campbell and Pierre-Luc O'Brien each scored for South Carolina as well.

South Carolina rookie goaltender James Reimer, who made 26 saves Friday, was named the Most Valuable Player after going 3-1 with a goals-against average of 1.64 and a save percentage of .942 in the Finals.
