Moving is often considered one of the most stressful events in someone’s life, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Though the moving experience may feel overwhelming, being well-prepared can ease the process—and the associated stress—immensely.

Before your next move, follow these tips from the professionals at Champion Movers to ensure a smooth transition into your new home.

• Schedule services early

To reduce last-minute stress, start planning as early as possible.

Six to eight weeks before the move, contact the moving company to get an estimate and book a date. Schedule any other services—such as carpet cleaning, handyman work, etc.—during this time period as well.

• Pack strategically

It’s important to have everything packed and ready the night before your move date. Begin with items you don’t use regularly and continue to pack based on use-frequency.

For example, the fancy flatware you only pull out during holidays can likely be packed a couple weeks in advance, but your everyday-clothes and personal items should be some of the last things you pack.

• Plan for the first night

Set aside a special box for anything you’ll need when you arrive at the new house, such as clean sheets, pajamas, toothbrushes, etc.

If you have children and/or pets, be sure their necessities are easily accessible too—and don’t forget about toys and games to keep them occupied while you set up.

• Overlap your utilities on move-day

Keep utilities on at both locations while moving. Generally, the utilities at your current home should be turned off the day after your move, and the utilities at your new home should be turned on the day before your move.

• Be prepared to move some things on your own

You should be responsible for transporting any cash, jewelry, firearms and flammable liquids. This is as much for your own security as it is for the moving crew because they’re generally prohibited from handling these items.

You should also arrange to transport house plants to ensure they make it safely.

• Make a plan for your pets

If you have pets, you will need to transport them and keep them comfortable during the move.

Some people choose to board their pets at a facility near their new home while they’re getting settled, but if you decide to keep them with you, be sure they’re secured and closed in a room during the moving process.

• Choose a reputable moving company

Not all movers are created equal, and it’s important to choose a quality company before entrusting them with all of your earthly possessions.

Look for companies that are licensed, bonded and insured. Make sure they employ professional movers, rather than hiring day laborers, and have experience with all types of moves. They should be able to answer any of your questions and concerns, as well as explain your contract before signing.
