Boston Killer Alert Flashed to Casinos

A hired killer who likes to gamble and hole up in cocktail lounges is being sought in Las Vegas as one of the ten most wanted criminals in the United States.

FBI agents identified him as Carmen Raymond Gagliardi, 26, of Medford, Mass., known to be responsible for at least one of some 50 gangland murders in the Boston area in the past 37 months.

Agents here said Gagliardi's habits might well make a candidate for Las Vegas, but emphasized he could just as well be anywhere else.

"We have no special word that he's in our area. The FBI is hunting him all over the country," an agent stated.

Nevertheless, an alert for the Boston killer was passed to casino men and bartenders on the Strip and downtown. Local police broadcast his description to all cars with the warning Gagliardi was probably armed and should be considered extremely dangerous.

He was last seen in Medford on April 8 when he drove through a red light. As police pulled his car to the curb, Gagliardi and another man jumped out and ran. A third man was trapped in the rear seat and arrested.

A fourth occupant of the car, sitting erect on the right front seat, was dead. He had been shot once in the head and 3 times in the abdomen. Police identified him as a 28-year-old bartender mixed up in local rackets.

On the front seat of the car was a .38 caliber revolver, and a derringer was on the floor. Both weapons were purchased in another state two days earlier.

An FBI circular giving detailed characteristics of Gagliardi's habits says he abhors work but occasionally has worked as a laborer and truck driver.

In addition to a liking for gambling and nightclubs, Gagliardi is also reported to frequent pool rooms and bowling alleys. He drinks screwdrivers almost exclusively, and smokes menthol cigarettes, the circular says.

He is said to be a neat and conservative dresser, uses late model rented cars and exercise by swimming or running.

Gagliardi is also a good shot with hand guns and rifles, and is especially good with a rifle, said the FBI. He has a tattoo of his first name, "Carmen," on his upper right arm, and a cross and wreath on his upper left arm.

The fugitive is 5'10." 185 pounds, has black hair, brown eyes, heavy build and medium complexion.
