City Council Briefs

* NEW LAWYER -- The City Council approved hiring attorney John Redlein to head the city attorney's civil division. Brad Jerbic, the city's top lawyer, hired Redlein -- a former deputy district attorney and chief deputy attorney general -- as part of an ongoing reorganization of his office. Redlein replaces Val Steed, who was transferred to head a new team drafting and reviewing legislation.

* NEW POOLS -- For $10.5 million, two growing Las Vegas areas will get new gymnasiums and pools. The City Council Wednesday approved spending the money for the 45,000-square-foot facilities at Durango Drive and Cheyenne Avenue and at Alta Drive and the future beltway, on the campus of the planned Palo Verde High School. Bonds will be sold to pay for the projects, which will be paid off with general city revenue.

* MORE PLANNING -- Jim Veltman, the land planner who's almost finished a major overhaul of the northwest general plan, is at it again, agreeing to draft a master plan for the Lone Mountain area. The $11,650 cost for designing the 300-acre tract near Cheyenne Road and the planned beltway will be picked up by private donations. Veltman's northwest general plan -- and a future design of a commercial strip in the heart of the northwest -- was also financed privately.
