Cable installation firm to pay back wages

A Las Vegas cable installation company accused of underpaying and overworking its employees is going to pay the owed money.

Medley Communications Inc. and owner Darrin Medley agreed to pay nearly $88,800 to 70 employees, according to federal court papers filed Thursday.

The U.S. Labor Department sued Medley Communications Inc. on Feb. 4. The corporation, headquartered in Corona, Calif., has 28 Las Vegas employees, a spokesman said.

In the suit, the Labor Department claimed that since October 1993, Medley Communications paid some workers below the minimum wage of $4.25 an hour.

The government also accused the corporation of requiring employees to work more than 40 hours a week without proper compensation.

The Fair Labor Standards Act, passed in 1938, aimed to eliminate substandard working conditions by setting minimum wages and maximum work hours.
