Creators of NY-NY in court

The newest thing at New York-New York is a lawsuit about who came up with the concept for the half-completed Strip resort.

The lawsuit, filed Thursday in federal court, claims the architectural firm of Domingo Cambeiro came up with the design but it was pilfered and sold to the resort's owners by political consultant Sig Rogich.

Rogich said Thursday that he had not seen the lawsuit but denied selling anything to New York-New York, a joint venture of Primadonna Resorts and MGM Grand.

In addition to Rogich and the New York-New York Ltd. Liability Co., the lawsuit names as defendants Americon Companies, Tri-M Holdings Inc. and businessmen Joel Bergman and Mark Advent.

In the lawsuit, Cambeiro alleges that in 1993 he was asked by Americon to design a New York-themed business for Advent.

The legal action contends that the subsequent "New York City Center" design showed a street with the Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge and other New York City buildings.

Cambeiro claims the original concept was revised at Advent's request but those later designs were taken by Rogich, whom the lawsuit identified as Advent's partner, and "sold to the prospective owners of the resort."

Rogich said he had sold his interest in Advent's company long before any transactions took place with the owners of the resort on the Strip at Tropicana Avenue.

The architect contends the drawings were his confidential property and protected under federal copyright laws. He says he never was compensated for the use of the ideas and designs.
