* SENIOR FRIENDS CELEBRATION -- The Sunrise Seniors Foundation will have a fund-raising event from 1-5 p.m. Sept. 28 at Arizona Charlie's. * WINE & CHEESE PARTY -- The Zelzah Shrine Temple Aviation Unit and Southern Wine and Spirits of Nevada is having a public wine-tasting party from 4-7 p.m. Sept. 20, at 2222 W. Mesquite, to raise money for their transportation fund, which transports burned and handicapped children for free medial care to Shiners Hospitals. The party will feature a variety of cheeses, breads and wines from more than a dozen wineries in California and Nevada, door prizes and a wine auction. Tax-deductible donations are $15 or $20 at the door.

* CRAFT & BAKE SALE -- Skipco announces its Charity Craft Fair and Bake Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 pm. Oct. 4. All proceeds will go to Operation Independence, a local day-care for low-income families. * SCOUTING FOR FOOD -- Dave Coon, sales manager for Anderson Dairy, has been chosen as chairman of the Boy Scout food drive for the needy which will be Nov. 15. Marydean Martin of Marydean & Associates, and Sumner Dodge of the Salvation Army, will join Coon on the steering committee. Sponsors of the Boy Scout Good Turn are Lockheed Martin and the Walters Group. Since 1988 scouts and leaders from Southern Nevada are responsible for collecting 467 tons of food through the Scouting for Food project. Last year's collection of 95 tons helped feel 15,000 families for six months.

* WITCHES BALL -- The fourth annual Witches Ball, which raises money for the City of Hope, will be 6:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Four Queens hotel-casino. Tickets are $50 and include a buffet dinner, no-host bar, live band, best-costume contest, door prizes, raffle and a trip for two to Hawaii. The Witches Ball is a project of Mr. and Mrs. Dwain Godown, in memory of their son, Richard, who lost his battle with leukemia in 1995.

* SUMMER EXTRAVAGANZA -- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada is having a chili cook-off from 4-8 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Las Vegas Mini Grand Prix on North Rainbow. Tickets are $12 or $40 for a family of four. The Nellis Thunderbirds and celebrity races will be on hand for entertainment. For tickets or information, call 731-2227.

* YARD SALE -- Reach Out, a nonprofit charitable organization working with children infected or affected by the HIV virus at 1522 Pinto Lane, will he having a yard sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 27-28. * FASHION SHOW AND LUNCHEON -- Seats are still available for the 1997 Fashion Show and Luncheon to benefit the Southern Nevada Chapter of the Alzheimers Association Sept. 10 in Bally's Skyview Room. Ivana Trump and Mayor Jan Jones will be special guests. A silent auction for more than 60 trips, gift packages and unique services will be up for bid. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the event for $5 each or six for $25. Guests will be served wine upon arrival donated by Southern Wine and Spirits of Nevada and harpists Caryn and Michelle Gott have donated their time to entertain guests. * RELAY FOR LIFE -- Sam's Club at 5101 S. Pecos, recently presented a check to the American Cancer Society for $1,015. A matching grant also will be provided by the Walmart Foundation. These contributions were derived from Relay for Life Walk-A-Thon held in May.

* WRANGLER'S DONATION -- Wrangler Bull Riders Only donated $10,000 to the Sunrise Children's Hospital Foundation. The organization, specializing in bull riding, also donated 30 pairs of Wrangler jeans to children who benefit from the foundation's Home Instruction Program for Preschool Youngsters program and Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect program.

* MDA BENEFIT -- The Summerlin Women's Club sponsored a Food and Wine Festival/Silent Auction at the Santa Fe hotel-casino on June 21. Proceeds were donated to the Southern Nevada Chapter of Muscular Dystrophy Summer Camp Program. The $4,000 raised enabled 10 area children with muscular dystrophy to attend a special camp with activities designed to accommodate their special needs.

* OPPORTUNITY VILLAGE DONATIONS -- Boyd Gaming recently donated several floors of used hotel furniture to Opportunity Village thrift stores in Las Vegas and Henderson. Profits from the stores support vocational training programs for people with mental retardation.

* PEDIATRIC EQUIPMENT FOR UMC -- UMC has received a $100,000 contribution from the Lincy Foundation to purchase equipment for the new pediatric emergency room and nursery. To date, the foundation has donated $1.6 million toward the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment for UMC.

* FIVE PROGRAMS HELPED -- The Lincy Foundation has donated $10,000 to HELP of Southern Nevada for use in the continuance of five programs: Displaced Homemakers, Information and Referral, Family Resource Centers, Community Alternative Sentencing and Weatherization.

* 5K RUN/WALK -- The Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation is sponsoring a 5K run/walk at 7 a.m. Sept. 6 at Sunset Park. For more information, call 269-7777.

* HENDERSON GOLF TOURNAMENT -- The Lake Mead Christian Academy is having its second annual golf tournament with 6:30 a.m. continental breakfast and 7:30 a.m. shotgun start (four-person scramble) Sept. 25 at the Badlands Golf Club. Lunch, a raffle and awards will be presented at noon. Your tax-deductible donation will help build their new school at 540 E. Lake Mead Drive, Henderson. Golfers can win cars or motorcycles for a hole-in-one. Other gifts include gift certificates for golf, dinners, and awards for the longest drive and closest to the pin. Entry fee is $300. * FIREFIGHTERS VS. POLICE SOCCER GAME -- The first Firefighters vs. Police soccer game will be 8 p.m. Saturday at UNLV's Peter Johann Memorial Soccer Field. Admission is $3 and sold the day of the event at the gate. All proceeds will benefit UMC's Children's Miracle Network. * HUMANITARIAN AWARDS -- Committed 100 Men, a nonprofit group that provides mentoring to African American boys, is having their sixth annual black-tie Humanitarian of the Year awards banquet at 7 p.m. Sept. 13 in the Roundhouse Ballroom of the Palace Station hotel-casino. * LITERACY DAY DINNER -- The Southern Nevada Literacy Coalition will host a Literacy Day Dinner honoring Nevada's First Lady Sandy Miller and dozens of volunteers who teach or tutor reading programs in Southern Nevada. The cocktail reception and dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Imperial Palace. The program includes keynote speaker Dr. Kenny Guinn and literacy student speaker Chuck Thompson. * DENNY CHOSE CITY OF HOPE -- Bobbie Jean Denny was recently named Volunteer of the Month by Courtesy Car Dealerships in Las Vegas. She received a check from General Manager Chuck Lee for $3,900 to give to the charity of her choice. Denny chose City of Hope. She is the newly elected executive vice president of the Sun City Summerlin chapter and will take office in October. She served as president of the Alzheimer Foundation of Southern Nevada for three years and is currently a member of the board of directors.

Special needs

* 'CLOTHES FOR KIDS' -- The Salvation Army's "Clothes for Kids" booth will be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during August at the Boulevard mall. The program will allow you to provide new school clothes for children of low-income families who will not be able to provide new clothes to start school this year. The event is being conducted in conjunction with the "Back to School Fair," sponsored by KVBC Channel 3, the Boulevard Mall and the Clark County School District. For more information, call 870-4430.

* NEED COUNSELING? -- UNLV's Client Services Center has openings for adults, children and couples who could benefit from counseling. The center provides a variety of counseling services, including support for persons facing marital difficulties, family communication problems, individual crises, parenting problems, career decision, and other important life issues. Counseling is provided by graduate students in the counseling program, under the supervision of member of the faculty. Appointments are available afternoons and evenings. * KARS FOR KIDNEYS -- Donate your used automobiles to the National Kidney Foundation of Nevada. Proceeds are used to help fund the foundation's patient services program. For more information, call 735-9222.

* HEALTH FAIR -- A free health fair including children's shots, eye and ear screenings and finger-painting will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 13 at Sam's Club, 5101 S. Pecos. No Sam's Club membership required. For more information, call 456-5596.

* LUCKY TO THE RESCUE -- The 24 local Lucky Food Centers will be having an emergency food drive through Saturday to help the Salvation Army collect food for needy families and the homeless. Collection containers will be located at the customer service centers at each store. For every three items donated, free tickets to the Stratosphere's American Superstar show will be distributed. Anderson's Dairy has volunteered to pick up the food for the stores and deliver to the Army's food warehouse.

* GARAGE SALE & DONATION FUND DRIVE -- The Filipino American Club of Nevada Inc. is having a nonprofit garage sale and donation fund drive every weekend from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Sept. 27-28 at 222 S. Bruce (off Charleston). Items include restaurant furniture and kitchen equipment from Nilda's Supper Club, formerly owned by the club's president, Nelida McKellar. * CASA VOLUNTEERS NEEDED -- The Clark County CASA Program is having their semiannual volunteer recruitment fair from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Family Courthouse, 601 N. Pecos. Volunteers are trained to speak up for abused and neglected children in court. For more information, call 455-4306.

* HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS -- Volunteers are needed at the Nathan Adelson Hospice. Applicants are required to learn how to provide emotional and practical support to the terminally ill and their families. Classes will be for five consecutive Saturdays beginning Sept. 27. Call 733-0320 by Sept. 19 to register. There are also non-patient care volunteer opportunities available which do not require course attendance.
