Wife of former Chief Justice Batjer dies

CARSON CITY -- A memorial service will be held Saturday for Lura G. Batjer, the wife of former Chief Justice Cameron Batjer of the Nevada Supreme Court.

She died Tuesday at Washoe Medical Center in Reno at the age of 82.

She graduated from the University of Nevada in 1936 and taught school in Dayton, where she met and married Cameron in 1942. While he served in the Navy during World War II, she worked as a cost accountant at Stead Air Force Base near Reno.

She was born April 18, 1915, in Ogden, Utah, and the family then moved to Nevada, where they lived on the Gamble Ranch near Hazen. She graduated from Churchill County High School in 1932 and while there was an outstanding student and athlete.

Her husband was an attorney who served on the Nevada Supreme Court and later on the U.S. Parole Board in Washington, D.C., until his retirement. The couple then moved to Reno.

She was a member of numerous civic groups and the First Presbyterian Church, where the memorial service will be held.

Survivors include her husband, Cameron, and daughters Lura Batjer Caldwell of Reno, Christina Batjer of Salt Lake City and Marybel Batjer of Sacramento, Calif. She is also survived by a sister, Ann Gamble Walts of Reno, and a brother, John Gamble of Carson City. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
