Columnist Muriel Stevens: Chance meeting goes a long way for couple

"THAT LOVE is all there is; it is all we know of love -- it is enough."

Those words by Emily Dickinson could have been written for Chantal and Steve Cloobeck, who were married Saturday at The Mirage.

They met by chance. Chantal (nee LeDuc) formerly made her home in Los Angeles, but each time she came to Las Vegas for a day, her path would cross Steve's. Destiny? Perhaps. But it wasn't long before they were more than just friends and engaged to be married.

Their wedding was as beautiful as the bride, who is a model and an actress. The groom is the president of the Polo Towers on the Strip.

Guests were hosted to a reception before the ceremony, which took place later than expected when the plane bringing Cantor Nathan Lam of the Stephen Wise Temple in Bel Air, Calif., was delayed. The Cloobecks have a long history with the Temple. Cantor Lam's wedding service reflected his long association with the family.

The wedding setting was glorious. A traditional chupah (wedding canopy) was covered with flowers. On an easel was the katubah, a decorative wedding certificate in Hebrew and English. The aisle was swagged with white tulle caught up with sprays of white flowers. Candelabra, glowing softly, lit the way for the bridal party.

Acting as ushers were R.J. Peltyn, Christian Rogers, Ashton Packe and Charles Law.

Family members and guests who gathered to celebrate the nuptials included the bride's father, Serge LeDuc, and his wife, Francine; her mother Diane with her husband, Michael Lalonde; the groom's father, Sheldon Cloobeck, with his wife, Marcia; his mother, Lynne Seflin, with her husband, Richard; his brother and sister-in-law Richard and Melinda Cloobeck; best man Gary Hecker, matron of honor Sandy Peltyn, Elaine Wynn, Dema and Kenny Guinn, Barbara Greenspun, Mayor Jan Laverty Jones and Richard Schuetz, Claudine Williams, Thalia Dondero, Pat and Sam Lionel, Nancy and Jack Weinstein, Gary Frey, Vera and Clyde Turner, Michael Frey, Myrna Williams, Drs. Parvin and Ted Jacobs, Johnathan Stevens, Miriam and Sheldon Adelson, and Michele and Michael Berk.

The bride was radiant in a white Vera Wang off-the-shoulder gown with a bodice of Dutch silk satin and a tiered skirt of 12 layers of tulle. Her bridal veil and headpiece was a halo of tulle. The groom wore an Emilio Zegna tuxedo and the engraved watch given to him by the bride as an engagement gift. The groom's engagement gift to the bride was an oval-cut diamond ring accented on each side with trillion-cut diamonds.

Following the tradition of something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, the bride wore "old" shoes, the new gown, borrowed diamond earrings (35 carats of gems) from Martin Kazt, and a blue garter.

After the ceremony curtains behind the chupah were drawn revealing the exquisitely decorated dining room. The theme of gold and white was carried through in the gold-banded white napery, gold flatware and dishes accented with gold. Cigars for the men and gold and white chocolates for the woman were part of the settings. On each table a tall gold-ribboned pillar overflowed with white flowers and baby-pink roses -- at the base were lemon leaves and fragrant white gardenias. It was a dazzling vision created by designer florist Jon Tullis. The wedding was coordinated by Carlos Collado of The Mirage.

Dinner was a splendid repast of Maine lobster timbale on smoked salmon, a Caesar salad, and an entree of tournedo of beef and morel-crusted filet of Lake Superior whitefish.

A superb multilayer wedding cake with each tier a different flavor -- banana cake with banana and chocolate filling, chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling, white sponge cake with strawberry whipped cream and strawberries, white sponge with pina colada filling, white sponge with Grand Marnier filling and a top tier of chocolate cake filled with mocha mousse was dessert. The extravagant confection was created by Mirage Chef Randy Foster and made by Chef Tom Donald.

Before the cake-cutting, a round of toasts were made -- best man Hecker quoted from "Hamlet" in his toast to the newlyweds; the bride spoke glowingly about her groom; he in turn toasted the bride, but not aloud, his toast was rendered privately.

Others sharing the blissful event were Roger Peltyn, Lauri and Blackie Hunt, Bruce Becker, Freddie Glusman, Steve Mack and "Dawn," Tena Rogers, Lance Malone, Mary Kincaid, Bonnie and Frank Schreck, Shelley Berkley, Jody and Dr. Elias Ghanem, Darlene and Congressman John Ensign, Dr. Barry Markman, Chad Brownstein, and Bill Westerman and Lexi Jablonski.

Before departing for a honeymoon in Paris, Cannes, Monaco and Portofino, the Cloobecks stayed in the Lanai suite, part of the exclusive Villas at The Mirage.

Their Las Vegas home will be in Spanish Trail.
