Columnist Muriel Stevens: Isis a jewel in new-look Luxor

IT'S MUCH EASIER these days keeping up with the Joneses than it is keeping up with Las Vegas restaurants.

New ones open on a regular basis, older ones are being revamped or getting new menus. It's all very exciting.

It seems like only yesterday that Luxor opened its doors, but the hotel has just completed a major remodeling. No remodeling was necessary for the gorgeous Isis restaurant.

The moderately expensive menu belies the elegance and beauty of this dining room. Included on the menu are such cold ($10) and hot ($12) appetizers as oysters on the half-shell with a shallot and balsamic vinegar marinade, marinated shrimp and lobster, baked shrimp filled with a crab and mushroom duxelle and the Isis spin on the classic oysters Rockefeller -- poached oysters atop creamed spinach with a touch of Pernod.

Isis soups ($6) are flavorful and satisfying. The lobster bisque is finished with aged Armagnac.

Salads ($6-$12) are large enough to share. Full or half portions ($15-$10) of the two pasta dishes are offered.

Isis offers two dishes that would satisfy most special diets ($12) -- ratatouille Provencal with polenta or curried seasonal vegetables with tofu and rice. Entrees are $24, $22 and $17. Grilled veal, Black Angus filet mignon, beef Wellington, rack of lamb and chateaubriand are in the $24 group. Lobster tail en croute -- a personal favorite, Dover sole, bouillabaisse and jumbo tiger prawns are among the $22 selection. Magret (breast) of duck, braised breast of pheasant and seared sesame chicken are included for $17.

Isis a la carte vegetable selection ($5) includes Bulgar pilaf and minted couscous along with such favorites as garlic mashed potatoes, broccoli Hollandaise, fresh asparagus and more.

The dessert selection ($6) features chocolate or Grand Marnier souffles, an array of fresh fruit, choices from the pastry cart, the signature baked Egypt or Dahibeyeh delight. Strawberries Romanoff ($8 per person) for two or more is prepared tableside.

Isis hours are 5-11 p.m. Reservations are requested. Call 262-4773.

Lady Luck

There's a new, larger menu in the Burgundy Room at the Lady Luck. All of the favorite dishes have been kept, but a variety of new ones have been added. Dinners include a choice of soup or Caesars salad or the Burgundy Room salad -- a mix of seasonal greens, crab and shrimp and the special house dressing.

Available a la carte is a selection of hot and cold appetizers ($6.95-$9.95), soups ($5.95-$6.95) and salads ($5.95-$7.95).

Entree choices ($14.95-$21.95) include the classics -- veal Oscar, chicken Angelo, veal Marsala, beef Wellington, tournedos Rossini and a smashing 16-18-ounce portion of prime rib. Rack of lamb and chateaubriand for two ($39.95-$44.95), a host of fresh seafood dishes ($18.95-$29.95) including live Maine lobster and whole Dover sole are also available. Among the new items is a whopping (38-ounces) porterhouse steak for two for $44.95. An 18-ounce porterhouse is $21.95. Flaming desserts, now making a comeback, have always been featured at the Burgundy Room.

Prepared tableside are fresh berries flambe, bananas Foster and cherries jubilee. Each must be ordered for two or more people ($6.95 per person). Pastries and speciality cakes ($4.95) are served from a cart brought to the table. Whipped cream-topped speciality coffees make a luxurious ending.

Maitre d' Tim Hicks advises that on Friday and Saturday nights, overflow reservations are accommodated in the adjacent dining room, formerly the Chinese restaurant, so don't hesitate to call at the last minute. This attractive room is also available for private parties.

The Burgundy Room serves dinner 5-11 nightly. Reservations are requested. Call 477-3000.
