People in the News for May 29, 1997

Bob Hope -- international man of polite applause and forced laughter or comforting presence to homesick soldiers? It's the latter Bob who will be honored tonight in Beverly Hills, Calif., for the twin achievements of winning the Ronald Reagan Freedom Award and reaching his 94th year. "There will be a strong military presence on hand because we are honoring him for all that he's done for the military in more than half a century," says a Ronald Reagan Foundation spokesman. Merv Griffin will emcee and Nancy Reagan will present the award. Will Brooke Shields show up in an elf suit?

Briefly

The fan

When you're as big, as large, as huge a star as Wynonna, you have to expect the occasional oddball fan living on an island behind your house and leaving unwanted gifts at your door. But you don't have to like it. Franklin, Tenn., police arrested Randall Dee Kimbrough, 39, after he was spotted on the porch of Wynonna's house. He was, he said, simply dropping off a gift for the country singer. It seems he'd been living on a tiny island in the Harpeth River, which winds behind her property. Kimbrough has been charged with trespassing. No word on what his gift to Wynonna was. Something with nuts, no doubt.
