Venerable Strip resort to close for new hotel

Owners of the prime Strip property plan to build two new hotels on the site. One will include 2,700 rooms and a 450,000 square foot retail center while the other will be a 1,000-room hotel-casino with a heavy music and entertainment theme.

The existing 17-story resort is expected to be imploded by Aladdin Holdings LLC, which owns the 35 acre property.

"When it is completed, this exciting destination will provide more than 7,000 jobs for Nevadans," said Richard Goeglein, the company's chief executive officer.

Some 1,700 workers will lose their jobs when the hotel closes in November, with the hotel expected to come down after the first of the year.

If the hotel tower is imploded, it would be the fifth of a major hotel here. The Dunes Hotel, across the Strip from the Aladdin, was imploded in October 1993, the Landmark in November 1995, the Sands in November 1996 and the Hacienda in December 1996.

The 7,000-seat Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts is likely to be spared during the two-year construction schedule.

The Aladdin sits on a prime piece of Strip property across from the $1.4 billion Bellagio, which will open next year, and adjacent to Bally's.

The hotel has had financial difficulties over the years, however, as it passed through a series of different owners.
