Churchill County school expulsions up slightly

Assistant Superintendent Gary Imelli said the number of expulsions was up by four from the previous year, but that reflected the district's growth, since both years saw 1.7 percent of the enrollment affected.

"It might seem like a lot, but 1.7 percent is not a large percentage of the population," he told the Lahontan Valley News.

The expulsions included a fifth-grader at Northside Elementary who took an unloaded .22-caliber gun to class in March. She said she forgot it was in her pocket.

Fifteen of the expulsions were at the high school. Four involved weapons, two were for fighting, five had five suspensions and four were for other reasons.

The remaining nine expulsions were at Churchill Junior High. Three were for fighting, two for weapons, one for drugs and three for having five suspensions, Imelli said.
