Elko School District provides car for truancy officers

The school district has authorized spending $18,506 in state funds to purchase a car for the district's two police officers so they can make house calls.

Superintendent Marcia Bandera said the officers will use the car to check up on absent pupils and talk with them and their parents, the Elko Daily Free Press reported.

The funding was provided by a law passed during the 1997 Legislature that requires closer monitoring of absenteeism, notification of law enforcement officials about pupils with three or more unexplained absences and action by juvenile courts that may include fines and suspension of driver's licenses.
