Dean's list:

Three University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign student are among the newest additions to the dean's list there -- Jay Allison Ingalls and Scott Michael Lee, both of Henderson and Phuong T. Vuong of Las Vegas. Ingalls is studying engineering; Lee is studying commerce and business administration; and Vuong is studying liberal arts and sciences.

Karen M. Von Deneen of Las Vegas, was named to the Morehead State University's dean's List for the 1998 spring semester.

Stephanie M. Allen of Las Vegas was named to the 1998 spring semester dean's honor list at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Seth Wurzel of Nevada, a student at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, was named to the Dean's List. Rose-Hulman is an institute in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Derante D. Parker of Las Vegas was placed on the dean's list for the 1998 spring semester ay Idaho State University College of Arts and Sciences. Sharon Gold, daughter of Hannah and Dan Gold of Las Vegas, has made the dean's list at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass.

Donna Lee Hecht of Las Vegas, a student at Valdosta State University in Georgia, has been named to the Dean's List for the 1998 spring semester.

Kyle A. Green of Las Vegas was named to the spring Dean's List at Columbia College in Columbia, Mo.

James W. Cavin, Wanda Chen, Shanna M. Conley, Stephanie J. Creary, Sophia S. Dileonardo, Laruen A. Syverson and John P. Wanderer, all from Las Vegas, were named to the dean's list at Boston University for the 1998 spring semester.

Larry Rose of Las Vegas has been named to the dean's list at University of Idaho during the 1998 spring semester.

Shannon D. DeCosta of Las Vegas has been named to the dean's list at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania during the 1998 spring semester.

Scholastic honors:

Christian Purdie of Las Vegas, a student at Commercial College of Southern Nevada, was awarded the Post-Secondary Silver Medal in Commercial Photography at the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America 34th annual Leadership Conference and Skills USA Championships.

Four local students have made the honor roll at Oregon State University. They are Eleissa A. Miller of Henderson, College of Health and Human Performance; Pippa L. Barton of Las Vegas, home economics and education; Penny K. Judalena of Las Vegas, post baccalaureate, college of pharmacy; and Justin L. Watkins, freshman of Las Vegas, pre-engineering program.

Paul W. Goodman, son of Wendy Goodman of Las Vegas, has been named to the honors list at Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa.

Scholarships and recognitions:

Heather Marren, freshman in forest recreation resources, has earned the Forestry Alumni Scholarship for her academic and other achievements at Oregon State University.

Sasa Nikolic, a senior at Valley High School was recently elected to the office of Trustee of Key Club International at the organization's annual convention in Atlanta, Georgia. Nikolic began his Key Club leadership career as editor of the club bulletin and served during the past year as a project chairman for the California-Nevada-Hawaii Key Club District.

Daniel Vasquez, son of Mary Lou Vasquez of Las Vegas, has been selected as a member of the Stephen F. Austin State University 1998 Summer Repertory Company. All performances will be presented in the auditorium of SFA in Nacogdoches, Texas.

Smith's Food & Drug Centers, Inc., Channel 8 and the Clark County Public Education Foundation are awarding twenty Clark county high school seniors with $1,000 scholarships through the Personal Best Scholarship Program.

The scholarships rewards students who have met and overcome a personal challenge and who without financial assistance, would not have the opportunity for post-secondary education.

This year's recipients are: Kimberly Drase, Autumn Montoya, Shamanda Milton, Horizon High School; Fawn Sparks, Courtney Carroll, Tyesha Sykes, SNVTC; Jamar Barnes, Kelly McGuire, Pearl Curbelo, Erica Avila, Tara Louviere, Rancho High School; Rose Bassler, Green Valley High School; Danny O' Sullivan, Community College High School; Hattie Ramos, Sunset High School; Melissa Perry, Advanced Technologies Academy; Tiffany Daigle, Cimarron-Memorial High School; Diamond Ross, Las Vegas High School; Deanna Dreesen, Silverado High School; Sachiko Ito, Durango High School; Oliver Redig, Basic High School.

Degrees:

Six Las Vegas students received degrees at the completion of the 1998 spring semester from the University of Wyoming. Bonnie L. Peterson and Dianna L. Tyler received bachelor of science degrees; Kristen Idella Glasser received a bachelor of science in nursing; Walter L. Ritchie and Becky H. Thompson, received their bachelor of arts degree; and D. Neal Tomlinson received his law degree.

Anna R. Falkowitz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Falkowitz of Las Vegas recently graduated from North Central College in Naperville, Ill. Falkowitz earned a bachelor of arts in biology.

Jeremy Michael Boucher of Henderson and Judith Anne Ramsey of Las Vegas graduated from Oklahoma State University News Bureau recently. Boucher earned a bachelor of science in physiology, and Ramsey earned a bachelor of science in hotel and restaurant administration.

Bryan Michael Cutler, a charter member of Lewis & Clarke College's Phi Beta Kappa chapter in Portland, Ore., earned a bachelor of arts degree in physics.

Michael David Wright of Las Vegas graduated from Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa in the spring. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in social science and graduated cum laude.

Marla Suzanne Scher of Las Vegas received a bachelor of science degree from Bradley University.

Deanna Dee Azhikakath of Las Vegas received a bachelor of arts degree with majors in history and political science and a minor in communication arts at Southern Methodist University.

Stephen Kopolow of Las Vegas has been awarded a Juris Doctor Degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego.

Jeves Davila of Las Vegas has been awarded an undergradute degree in education from Manhattan College in New York.

Linda Nguyen of Las Vegas has received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Bei Wang from Reno was awarded a master's degree in electical engineering and computer science from MIT.

Student Ambassadors

Thirteen middle school students from the Las Vegas area represented the United States as student ambassadors with the People to People Student Ambassador Program during a three week tour of Australia.

Students Dayna Ahern, Cassie Fountain, Alicia Frei, Jennifer Hughes, Michael Kalman, Noel Maziar-London, Jessica Moskowitz, Andy Pfahler, Amanda Reynolds, Adam Rivier, Melissa Russell, Ambrose Sayles and Diane Velarde.

Burkholder Middle School teacher Barbara Garrett, made up the delegation along with the 13 student ambassadors that traveled the eastern coast of Australia this June.

Their travels and adventures included a stay at a cattle station in the Outback, snorkeling at the Great Barrier reef, exploration of the rain forest and Aborigines culture and a home stay with Australian families.

Students were chosen by the Spokane based People to People organization, which was started during the Eisenhower administration to promote good relations between the United States and countries around the globe.

Today, student ambassadors travel to China, European countries and Africa in addition to Australia.
