Chancellor may get $205,237 a year

A regents committee has recommended a 3 percent cost-of-living increase and a 2.25 percent merit increase for Jarvis. Both adjustments would be retroactive to July 1.

Regent Maddy Graves, a member of the Evaluation Committee, proposed the merit increase. The full regents' board will decide on the pay hike at its October meeting in Las Vegas.

"He's the best thing to ever happen to the system," Graves said of Jarvis, hired in 1994 to run the University and Community College System of Nevada.

Jarvis said his objectives for the coming year are to get the university system growth funded by the Legislature in what could be a lean year for state spending.

The past two budgets have treated higher education well, but there were surplus funds available, he said. Getting the system's program approved in 1999 may be tougher because of more limited funding, Jarvis said.

The key will be to present a unified front from all six campuses to the governor and Legislature, he said.

Last year's salary increase for Jarvis included a $3,700 "equity adjustment" to bring his salary above that of the highest-paid campus president.

Jarvis also gets a $24,000 housing allowance to maintain residences in Reno and Las Vegas, a $6,000 automobile allowance and a $5,000 host account.
