Las Vegas Stars scorecard -- August 7, 1998

First baseman Jason Thompson's season came to an end after he underwent surgery to repair a torn right rotator cuff in San Diego on Wednesday. Thompson, who had been on the disabled list since July 2nd, suffered the injury on May 15th while making a game-saving diving catch in a 2-1 win over Tucson. Thompson, who hit .271 with three home runs and 17 RBI, went on the seven-day disabled list in May for what was thought to be a sprained shoulder and returned to play from May 23rd to July 1st. However, he didn't have an RBI in his last 71 at-bats before going on the DL for good on July 2nd. "The shoulder we thought was OK again actually had a torn rotator cuff," Stars manager Jerry Royster said. Thompson throws left-handed, so the injury is not believed to be career-threatening. ... With San Diego's acquistion of reliever Randy Myers from Toronto on Thursday, the Padres are expected to send another player to Las Vegas today. If so, Royster will have to make a player move to open a roster spot. "I'm supposed to find out what they're going to do (Friday morning)," Royster said. "If they send someone here, we'll have to do something." ... Whatever move is made could be a short one. The triple-A rosters expand from 23 to 25 men on Tuesday. ... Outfielder Aaron Guiel, battling back from vision problems with a rehab stint at Peoria, Ariz., of the Arizona Rookie League, is batting .636 after six games with seven hits in 11 at-bats, including two doubles, a triple, a home run and five RBIs. ... Overlooked in Thursday's stunning loss to New Orleans was the fact Stars starter Brian Tollberg sparkled again, yielding just three hits and two runs in six innings. Tollberg walked one and struck out six and would have notched his third straight victory if not for the ninth inning bullpen collapse. ... Arias wasn't the only offensive star for Las Vegas Thursday night. Left fielder Dusty Allen had three doubles in the loss.

The Stars continue their series with New Orleans tonight at Cashman Field at 7:05 p.m. with left-hander Heath Murray (7-7, 4.39) scheduled to pitch against Zephyrs' right-hander Bob Scanlan (1-2, 7.54). The series continues Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. with right-hander Matt Clement (10-6, 3.86) opposing New Orleans right-hander Johan Lopez (5-1, 5.81) and concludes Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. with right-hander Brad Kaufman (9-8, 6.47) set to pitch for the Stars against a pitcher to be announced for the Zephyrs.
