Three nominated for judgeship

CARSON CITY -- The state Commission on Judicial Selection said today it has nominated three Clark County lawyers to succeed Judge Don Chairez who resigned to run for Congress.

They are Kenneth C. Cory, 54, of Henderson who is in private practice in Las Vegas; Mark Denton, 46, also in private practice in Las Vegas and Philip Kohn, 47, a deputy in the Clark County Public Defender's Office.

There were seven applicants for the job and the commission narrowed the list after interviews in Las Vegas.

The names go to Gov. Bob Miller who will make the final selection. The attorney named will be in office until January.

The office is open for election in November. Those wanting to run must collect signatures of registered voters amounting to 1 percent of those who cast ballots in the last election for that office. The deadline for submitting the petition is Sept. 15.
