Just two break par at Nevada Amateur

The Sun Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort proved to be up to the challenge of hosting the state's best amateur golfers as only two players broke par Wednesday in the opening round of the Nevada State Amateur Championship.

Las Vegan Darrell Lutey and T.J. Duncan, representing the Northern Chapter of the Nevada State Golf Association, shot matching 1-under-par 71s on the 7,112-yard Pete Dye layout and shared the lead going into today's second round.

Scott Piercy of Las Vegas and Matthew Woodhead of the North were one shot back of the leaders at even-par 72.

Defending Nevada State Amateur champion Steve Sheehan was among eight golfers tied at 73, two shots off the lead. Also in that group was Billy Harvey, the Bonanza High grad and BYU sophomore who qualified for this month's U.S. Amateur at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y.

Mike Louden, a product of Green Valley High who attends Fresno State University, also qualified for the U.S. Amateur. Louden was tied for 19th place after shooting an opening-round 76 Wednesday.

Las Vegans Terry Henslee and Jim Tucker shared the first-round lead in the net division with adjusted scores of 66. Butch Avant of Las Vegas was alone in third place after an opening-round 67.

In the senior division, Jim Whisman of the North was the only player to break par Wednesday with a 71 and held a three-shot lead over Las Vegan Albert Fisher.

Play continued today on the 7,158-yard Snow Mountain course and concludes Friday on the Sun Mountain layout.
